A Occupational Drivers License (ODL) is a license that comes with limitations. This license allows an individual to operate a vehicle for essential tasks only. Such tasks could include: going to work, school, performing household duties, or any other necessary places in order to fulfill the necessities of everyday life.

This license allows you to perform essential tasks to your everyday life, but comes with limitations. An individual must not drive over 12 hours within a 24 hour time frame. Generally, there are a few ways you can track this 12 hour timeframe. First, an individual can choose a driving time block. For example, if your priorities lie between the time of 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM then that is that person’s time block. The state will only allow you to drive only between 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM. The second option for those with an Occupational Drivers License, is keeping a log with ALL driving time accounted for. This log cannot exceed the 12 hour daily limit, but is a good choice for those with changing schedules.

An ODL only applies to a basic automobile license, meaning that an individual is not allowed to operate commercial vehicles if their license gets suspended. Currently, there is no replacement for a CDL.

In the state of Texas, in order to be eligible for an Occupational Drivers License an individual must show an essential need to operate a motor vehicle. An essential need includes: needing transportation to and from the workplace, or school, and transportation for essential household duties including medical appointments. After proving that there is an essential need, there are multiple documents that need to be completed and fees that need to be paid to apply for an Occupational Drivers License.
